A Sunny Shady Life

Well I have to admit one thing in all honesty. With this novel, a new storyteller is born who is destined to go places if “A theory of intelligence” leads him there.

Infact storyteller wouldn’t be an apt word for him; raconteur would be the perfect adjective to describe him. And he is none other than 22 year “thinking adult”, if I may put it that way, DCEiite whose name is Sachinn Garg. Now you may be wondering why an extra ‘n’ in “Sachinn”. Is he like those who believe in changing their names for a better future? ;) Well you could direct those kind of queries to him here on his home page.

Before picking up the novel, I thought to myself that it would be another “IIT-IIM” type novel with college names a bit changed. And it would contain no more than the same mundane things happening at their respective campuses. But I was pleasantly surprised that the book titled “A Sunny Shady Life” is much more than a campus driven book.

It is a book about how an individual matures as he learns from his experiences, how serendipity plays an important part in one’s life, how one incidence can change your life so drastically. The novel is about Sunny Singh who is a student at DCE (Delhi College of Engineering) and his engineering life. But mind you, the presentation style is totally different than found in other “IIT-IIM” types books.

The book is organized as a transformation from Sunny, the guinea to Sunny, the wiki. Sunny, the guinea is reckless 18 year old guy who doesn’t have to worry about his public image and can go berserk at his will. On the contrary, Sunny, the wiki is a learner who has never dying thirst for knowledge, who is smart and has the gift of the gab.

A Sunny Shady Life” is an amalgamation of his varied experiences at DCE, some university in Paris, where he went for internship, a brothel where he went to screw a Non Indian female and got screwed in turn (read out to know more ;) ), and many more such interesting anecdotes which would not let you keep the book aside untill it is finished.

But all that was just a backdrop, the book is essentially about the curiosity, the randomness, the entropy of highest order which a young mind goes through. The book is about a theory (”A theory of Intelligence” in this case) or that one incident which has the highest impact on a young mind.

But as it is said, nothing is without imperfections; this book too has some imperfections. To start with the most elementary ones, some facts are stated differently at different points in the novel. For example, on the back side of the book, the name of the lady love is incorrectly written. At some points, the book seems a bit stretched and one feels that the author has taken too many lines to describe the situation.

Above all, the book is a refreshing read which breaks the typical mould of “IIT-IIM”. Also since the novel has been written as a journey of experiences which later take on the shape of a book, it come across as an honest attempt.

A highly recommended read for all!!!!

  • Chanakya said: @Black: Yes I am from MDI but that does not mean that anything written above is hyperbole. His writing style was refreshingly different from all other authors which we have been reading all this while. :)
