The White Tiger is a debut novel by Aravind Adiga which won him the Man Booker Prize of 2008.
I have never read anything like this before! The plot is simple but the writing style is refreshingly new. Who would have imagined an entrepreneur from Bangalore telling his life stories to the premier of China!!!!
The protaganist is Balram Halwai aka “Munna” (hindi word for boy) who hails from a very small village “Laxmangarh” in north India. Although Halwai means ”sweet maker” in hindi yet his father is a rickshaw puller. He earns the title of “The White Tiger” for being the smartest kid in the school and the village.
Due to financial constraints, he is not able to finish his education yet it does not deter him to learn from live experiences. He makes life his school and himself his own teacher. His big break comes when a rich master takes him to Delhi as a driver. There he explores the “city”; everything is new to him-shopping malls, call centres, smartly dressed girls, obscene amount of wealth etc.
As he discovers the city gradually, he becomes that much disillusionised. He becomes aware of the vast difference between the “Darkness” of his village and “brightness” of the cities. He is also aware of the fact that to become a part of that “Young ,vibrant and wealthy India”, he has to peel off his inner skin which represents a servant; and he has to take some drastic steps if he has to step into the other world.
The book takes the form of a series of letters written at night to the premier of China. In the end, he goes on to explain how he turns an entrepreneur from a driver; how he quickly adapts to the “rich” world.
The book holds no surprises as such. The story is simple and many Indians would not find anything new in the plot. Yet it is advisable to read it once for its writing style; for the depiction of ongoing battle between two different inner selves.
