Ok! first thing first! This is not my original idea; I have borrowed it from the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. But yes I like the idea however it may seem absurd.

Think of it! People speaking all nice and good things about you when you can’t hear any of it because you are having your peaceful time in your grave. !!!

Now if that seems absurdity then living funeral would look a reality and a practicality. Ever regretted a decision of not sharing your emotions when the time was ripe? Why is it that we humans realize it only after the person or for that matter the situation has passed? And then we curse ourselves of not communicating how much we loved that person or how much we cared about that person.

In the book “Tuesdays with Morrie“, Mitch Albom elucidates the same point. He says that one should not wait too long to communicate simple words like ” I love you” or “I care about you” because it might happen that the wait may become endless. And hence the concept of “Living Funeral” where everyone and anyone who has any good things to share, SHARE.

This idea in a broad context also finds relevance in management studies where in students are required to write their own obituaries. The idea of such an exercise is that students have a sense of purpose in their life, how they want to be remembered once they are gone, what would they like to do in their life. Such exercises are a part of leadership courses taught around the B-Schools in India. ( I know atleast one, MDI).

I hope we humans understand the importance of communicating our emotions at the right time before it is too late!

  • Robert said: This is not the author's idea either. Living funerals are becoming a more and more common thing. I attended my first - for my grandfather - over 20 years ago. They are what a funeral should be - sharing and celebrating love, life, family and friendship.
